The regeneration of the Kings Cross area by the Kings Cross Central Limited Partnership and in particular the transformation of the three Gasholders structures into the premium apartments is one of the largest and most exciting redevelopments in London. A new development of 1456 apartments and penthouses, being built within the refurbished grade || listed, cast-iron gas holder guide frames next to Regent’s Canal, in the heart of Kings Cross. It is part of a 67-acre regeneration project that is creating 20 new streets, 10 open squares and nearly 2,000 homes, with 50,000sq-ft of retail space, cafes and bars.
Assigned with designing the interiors of the apartments within these iconic structures are Jonathan Tuckey Design, who faced an interesting challenge. With the need to strike a perfect balance between subtlety and modern elegance they drew inspiration from the Gasholders unique architecture and position. The team followed a concept of ‘industrial refinement’ with materials that would reinforce the Gasholders past but also enrich the senses, achieving this through the use of warm woods, natural stone and contrasting metals combined with bespoke solutions that help deliver a unique aesthetic through-out.
Wandsworth Electricals 100 years’ experience plus capability to design and create bespoke electrical accessories finished in any style, helped deliver the ‘industrial refinement’ look throughout Gasholders. Developing an array of unique plate combinations with a variety of finishes for the rooms within the apartments that both complemented and enhanced the design vision.
Since 1904, we have been designing and crafting beautiful, functional electrical accessories to enhance interiors and architectural wonders around the world. This unique experience and knowledge is harnessed in the The Wandsworth Journey, a journey in which we assist and guide from design concept to completed creation. Beginning and ending with British innovation, technical expertise and peerless craftsmanship and where every single plate, socket, switch, fixture and fitting is hand-designed and manufactured on home shores to impeccable industry standards.
A key element of the journey is our capability to bespoke design beautiful solutions. The bespoke design and manufacturing service was utilised by Jonathan Tuckey Design & Kings Cross Central Limited Partnership in the Gasholders project and ensures any unique design requirement is not compromised as we have both the technical artistry and manufacturing skills to match any design vision.
Two bespoke plates designed for the customised kitchen, with one that bends around a pillar to allow for the smooth continuation of the design. The plates provide 3 sockets plus a toggle and dimmer switch. Originally designed in Brass the finish was switched to Matt Black to mirror the controls panel on the other side of the pillar plus helping provide a strong contrast to the brass and stainless steel worktops.
To match the electrical accessories to the bespoke brass door furniture, we developed a tumbled brass finish, that elegantly sits with the door furniture and continues the brass finish style through the apartments, providing an understated glamour. The bespoke light switch has 3 toggles and one dimmer, with a black ring around one of the toggle to inform residents that this one controls the blinds. The Matt White plates use a brass ring, following the understated design style to indicate the blind control and beautifully blend in with the white look.
Extra-wide plug sockets were designed to mirror the width of the bespoke light switches for use in the apartment's bedrooms. These light switches provide the same functionality as those in design challenge 2 but on a different plate shape and sit either side of the bed. The tumbled brass version matches the light and door furniture handles within the room, whilst the white version matches the white clean look in those rooms.
The in-house design and manufacturing service customises plates to your exact specification, shape, size and interior configuration. Whatever your needs, we will deliver the ideal solution and all part of the Wandsworth Journey – 100 years in the making.
