Heritage

The Chancery Rosewood is a luxury suite-only hotel reimagined from one of London’s most notable architectural icons: the Grade II listed US Embassy in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair. Designed by renowned Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, this Brutalist structure was constructed in 1960 as the city’s first purpose-built embassy. Its façade of Greek Pentelikon marble and large-scale grille design creates a striking chequerboard effect and is topped by an 11-metre-wide gilded aluminium eagle crafted from B-52 Bomber aluminium by Polish-American sculptor Theodore Roszak. The building remains a mid-century standout amongst its Georgian neighbours.

Until 2018, the embassy served as the backdrop for several historic moments in Anglo-American relations, including visits by every U.S. president from John F. Kennedy to Barack Obama. After the US embassy team relocated south of the river, the building was bought by Qatari Diar in partnership with Rosewood Hotels and Resorts with a commitment to reinforce and enhance Saarinen’s original vision of ‘a palace on the park’.

It was a privilege to work on this truly distinctive project and to see a London landmark refitted with such exquisite attention to detail, and flair.

INGENUITY

The new building has been reconceived by David Chipperfield Architects with interiors by celebrated French architect and designer Joseph Dirand, taking inspiration from the sophistication of the 1920s and the creativity and glamour of the 1960s. The finished scheme uses a palette of warm tones punctuated with gold anodised aluminium accents.

When the hotel owners asked Wandsworth if they could make plates to match the chamfered edges of the hotel’s sleek modern lines “…we said, of course” says Nev Norval, Sales Manager, Wandsworth Group. “Unlike our competitors, we have control over our own manufacturing, at our factory in Surrey, near London, meaning we are the only people here to do what we do. We were able to set up a line to create exactly what was wanted.”

Wandsworth was also asked to produce a ringless toggle. “Having rings around each can look busy … so when they asked if we could make it without,” says Nev Norval, “we were delighted to. On a project like this, nothing is off-the-peg.”
