Understanding Georgian Design
October 26, 2018
Georgian architecture and interior is known for its easy elegance, grace, grandeur and timelessness. It incorporates many different elements yet remains chic and stylish, the perfect style for anyone who is looking for something sophisticated and classy.
The history of Georgian design
The Georgian period spans between 1714 and 1830 during which there were four consecutive King Georges on the throne. It is often divided into the early Georgian period, the mid Georgian period, and the late Georgian period. Over these three phases, Georgian design was developed and refined. It has been said that the style was partly a reaction to baroque, which George I loathed.
The colours and motifs of Georgian design
The colours of the Georgian design style are very light, pale and subtle: creams, dusky roses, powder blues, pea-greens and mauves. The style encompasses harmony, symmetry and light, incorporating Roman inspired elements such as alcoves, the three classical columns – Corinthian, Ionic and Doric, and motifs such as shields, urns, ribbons and garlands. There is also a lot of animal imagery in Georgian deign, both real and imaginary, usually sphinxes, griffins, satyrs and dolphins.
The furniture of Georgian design
Furniture of the Georgian design style is often delicate, elaborately engraved and gilded, such as intricately carved cabriole legs and ball-and-claw feet on baths and chairs. The furniture also often features velvet upholstering in luxurious fabrics such as damask, tapestry and brocade –though still in the delicate dusky shades rather than rich opulent colours.
How to incorporate Georgian Design into your home
If this style is one which you would like to integrate into your interior design, there are a few options. The first of these is to do it subtly, through a simple repeat pattern wallpaper, by using light colours in your paint and/or soft furnishings, or by adding it into your electrical accessories.
At Wandsworth, our Georgian Collection has distinctive, flawlessly executed pattern work in a beautiful rope edge design which perfectly conveys the spirit of the Georgian age. Each of our products is available in a range of finishes, and it will add matchless grace and character to any interior.
If you want a more obvious Georgian look, why not invest in a piece of delicately engraved furniture or some decorative Georgian objects, such as screens, fans, porcelain or lacquerware.
