Lighting Solutions for Period Properties
November 14, 2018
For a property that has historical fixtures, choosing lighting can often be regarded as a challenge. Your house is your home, not a museum, so you should always explore different styles regardless of when your home was built.
Being true to the period is not necessarily the best idea. A Georgian home, for example, would be entirely lit by candles – unsafe and impractical. It’s best to reach a compromise that lies somewhere between authentic and functional, whilst in keeping with your home’s aesthetic.
Look for Influences
Taking time to discover the influences of a particular period can help you decide on the perfect lighting for your property. Elizabethan, Baroque, Jacobean, Georgian, Edwardian and Art Deco inspired lighting is always popular with owners of period properties as these styles are often integrated with modern day fittings. That is not to say that antique lighting cannot be mixed with modern, as long as you establish a cohesive scheme that works with the dimensions of the room.
Using Different Types of Lighting
One thing that must be considered in any property, regardless of its age, is the amount of natural light that it gets. The trick is to find the ideal balance between general lighting, accent lighting and task lighting so that you can create the right atmosphere in every space. Note where the dark corners of a room are and how you wish to bring them back to life. You may even wish to design a room around a particular light fitting, especially if it’s something as grand as a crystal chandelier.
Enhance Period Features with The Right Lighting
Working with the period features of your home means that you can make an impact with your lighting scheme. A Victorian home that has low ceilings and nooks will benefit from wall lights and sconces whereas a Georgian property with a great deal of natural light will often require wall lights and floor lamps to achieve a warming atmosphere when the evening sets in.
